My daughter’s class has started doing a talent show every two weeks with another class. The purpose is to teach the children to perform in front of an audience.
The first time they had the show my daughter signed up without giving me much notice and then she decided on her own that she was going to do cartwheels, even though she doesn’t really know how to do a cartwheel. We just let her. Soon she found out that other kids were actually performing and she was in awe of her classmate that sang “Over the Rainbow.”
I told her that she should learn a song for the next time that she could sign up to perform, which wouldn’t be for another four weeks. She decided on “So Long Farewell” from The Sound of Music. Four weeks flew by and before I knew it she was telling me last night that she would be performing on Tuesday.
I panicked for a second and said, “You haven’t even practiced your song!”
“Yes I have Mommy,” she replied.
“When?” I asked.
“All the time.” So then she sang the song to prove it and she was right! She sang the song in its entirety and I was impressed. She sang her song today and she said it went well. She only forgot a couple of lines. I know it must have been her nerves because she knew the whole song.
When I was singing it with her when she first started practicing, a couple of weeks ago, I was confused about the word, “Aufwiedersehn.” I didn’t remember saying that word when I sang that song as a little girl. As the days went by and I sang the song more I suddenly had a flashback. When I used to sing the song I thought it said, “Our feet are saying goodbye,” instead of Aufwiedersehn!
I told my daughter and husband about it and we had a good laugh. I’m glad that at 38 I finally learned the right words to the song!
