A Million Lights

Wednesday, March, 19, 2008

I was born in a fishing village called Hinunangan on the island of Leyte in the Philippines.  At night, walking down a dirt road lined with houses, you might see the glow of a candle or a kerosene lantern from a living room window.  Few people had electricity.  In 1980, at the age of nineteen, I arrived in Las Vegas. My first thought as I looked out upon the desert lit with a million lights was, “So much electricity!”

Are you having fun?  Are your endeavors bringing you joy?  Do you find humor in what you’re doing?  What makes you think human beings can be convinced to want what you want them to want if you are uptight, upset, worried and bored?  Have a good time!  See the million lights of Las Vegas for the first time every day.  We are all so lucky to be making something happen in this great country.

A million lights light every day of my life.

I just said that a million lights light every day of my life and you probably read that as an exaggeration.  I mean, some days are bound to be dark, gloomy, hard and gritty aren’t they?  I have to tell you, not really!  I am very serious.  Every day of my life is like growing up by kerosene and seeing Las Vegas for the first time.  Every day is WOW!

Every day in the United States of America is an opportunity for me.  Schools are free and funding is abundant!  All I know is that there is no time to sink into fear.  When I feel the squeeze of circumstance, no matter what it is, I attack!  Squeeze me, and I squeeze you back!  For me, the lights never go out.  If I lose, if I mess up; then I go back and I win and I get it right.  Events that occur that seem bad are just events.  They are not about me and I don’t have time to go into a dark cave.  I have to shoot arrows and build walls and gather allies.  I’m busy!  I’m busy and I’m having fun.  Even digging my way out of the deepest hole is fun.  To me it is a challenge.
