Air Is Free

When I was a newlywed, I had very little in terms of material possessions.  One day while leafing through a Town and Country magazine, I saw a picture of a room in a big white house.  The furniture was round and made of beautiful polished teak in an Oriental style.  Oh, I really like that furniture (and the lifestyle it represented)!  I tore out the page from the magazine and I kept it on the table by my bed.  Every night when I went to bed and every morning when I woke up, I’d stare at it for a minute. The years passed and I went through a lot of changes, crazy ups and downs, and had three kids.  It was all fun and it was hard work.  Fifteen years later, I bought that furniture and put it in the nice, big house I now have.  Brick by brick, layer by layer, I worked toward my goal until the reality in my mind matched the reality in front of my eyes.

I am telling you this because planting the seed of a desire and then sticking with it can really transform your life far more brilliantly than you ever imagined because the original idea grows and takes on a life of its own.

When you want something bad enough, you think about it before you go to sleep—you write it down like you’re already living it.  For example, if you want a really nice home, you envision driving in your car, opening the gate, seeing the yard.  You make up in your mind what kind of home you have.  You may not even have 100 dollars.  You may be sleeping in your car, but you’re working on it in your brain.

The truth is that we are happiest when working towards a goal that has meaning for us, one that not only brings us success, but serves others.  You could be a person whose rent is past due and electricity is cut off and then you make your brain turn around and focus on a true purpose and you still don’t have any money, but you feel great.  You have to get oxygen in your brain to do this and the air we breathe is always free—so soak it up, suck it in, and use it to wake yourself up and make those dreams come true.

It is amazing to remember back 15 years (or longer) ago to my magazine cutouts...what my hopes and dreams were, what came true, what changed, and what I figured out really didn't mean as much as I thought. Great post!
