A friend of mine made a very interesting observation today and she was right on the money. She was commenting on my being Hispanic in America blog entry. She said that she found it interesting that we all read non-Hispanic or White authors, yet African-American authors and Hispanic authors are usually read more by their respective ethnic group. I thought that this was very insightful of her, because she herself isn’t Hispanic or African-American. I like the way she said, “I think more writers should cross cultural and ethnic lines and be accepted/read by everyone.”
She is very right. It’s an argument that many authors have made. There are some Latina authors that refuse being shelved in the Latina section because they are American authors. It’s not that they are ashamed of being Latina, it’s that they want for everyone to read their books, not just Latinas. I can understand that.
I love it when friends and strangers give me feedback on my writing. It’s refreshing to get other points of view. I’d love to get more comments, so please comment if you see something that interests you.
I picked up the April issue of skirt! today. I can’t wait to read it! I love the sentence on the cover, on the shoe, “be new shoes kinda happy.” Remember that happiness when you were a little girl? Remember that happiness now when you find a great pair of shoes on sale and they fit and feel great? Even better!
